For past couple weeks I had the pleasure of hosting a panel discussion at the New York Public Library, with some of the biggest names in comics business representing their vision for the comics medium. most fascinating panel to me, however, was the one about female characters — a topic that was, by most accounts, completely ignored the panelists I spoke with.
I have a good record at finding panelists who care about women in comics. Sometimes I'm more than happy to let panelists tell it like is because, well, most of us want to know how they feel about it. This time, though, I decided to step in.
So what was my experience?
In the lead up to panel, I was in contact with the panelists who had agreed to take part: Greg (Greg Pak), Joe (Jonathan Hickman), Phil (Paget Brewster), Chris (Chris Bachalo), Mike (Mike Johnson)-I could tell they were enthusiastic about telling it like is. The panel started with a brief introduction by Joe, who joked with me that if I ever got to sit in a room where women were complaining about how sexist something in comics was, I'd be the first person in room.
The panelists themselves have an intimate knowledge and appreciation of comics, and, well, what it's like to work in the industry and be a woman in it.
They're not just talking about what women are doing wrong in comics, they're talking about what it's like to be a woman in comics. They are talking a way that speaks to me — the women who are watching them speak and to me, as a person of privilege who has worked in comics and understands the culture at work in industry.
And I'm here to tell you that the experience of being a woman in comics is not, at first blush, as painful and challenging all that. When I began my career as an editor, and then a letterer, on in the editorial field, expectations about how people were supposed to talk about women were, like, "Women suck." The same went with people coming in to do covers and interior art, people coming in from television who didn't have a history of working in comics to speak from. It was "Women are not comics people, they're people who only want to talk about comics, and if they talk about comics suck," like it was a mantra.
And that was the thing, thing I kept going back to: That "they" were talking about comics as if it were only about men. So that, in a way, makes me.
